Today I Sat In A Room Of Americans And Watched Them All Cry
Today I sat in a room of Americans and watched them all cry.
There’s no need to ask why; we know why.
Today I watched my friends cry as they dealt with the prospect that their country, as of today, is not a country they know. It is not a country they are proud of, and it is not a country that they will feel comfortable in when they return to it.
I am proud to say that I have lots of good friends who are American. I have friends of ethnicity, friends who are part of the LGBT community, and female friends who have no desire to be mothers. And as of today, they are fearful of how they will be punished for being who they are.
Waking up today felt like the morning when Brexit was announced. I felt like I was living in a different world. The difference being, that in the world I woke up in today, perhaps the most powerful country in the world is now going to be led by a racist, sexist, homophobic, global-warming-denying, mad man. And that mad man has the ability to start wars, that will no doubt happen (either world wide, or within his own country).
It will take time for change to happen and things to come into play, but I pray that the future doesn’t pan out the way people are predicting. I hope that we can all put aside our fears and hatred, and move towards becoming united in the wake of this mess, because that is the only way we will get out of this alive.
This is going to be a very long 4 years, and I hope we all survive it…
We were rooting for you Hilary! 🙁
