Tonight is the night! The first episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 is finally hitting TV screens, and GOT nerds all over the world are losing it! Myself included…
If you haven’t started watching Game of Thrones yet, then you are missing out and need to get on it! If you are all caught up and ready for the final season then you will know that NO CHARACTER IS SAFE.
Also, nobody knows how the series is going to end. Even people who read the book series don’t know because the final book has been halted until the TV series has ended.
So, in my time waiting for the final season to come out, I have spent hours geeking out over fan theory videos and, obviously, discussing the subject with friends. So I thought why not write a fun blog post with my own theories for how the series will end and what I think the fates of the main characters will be.
So, here goes…
How Game of Thrones will end, in my humble opinion…
Daenerys is pregnant with a child of ice and fire
The last thing we saw in Season 7 was Jon Snow and Daenerys getting down. Daenerys has also discussed with Jon several times how she can’t have a child because of what the witch said in Season 2 when she killed Kahl Drogo.
As we know, with Game of Thrones, nothing is said just for the sake of it. They must be bringing up the fact that Daenerys ‘can’t have children’ so that it’s a big surprise when low and behold she’s pregnant… with Jon Snow’s baby.
Then technically there will be two children of ice and fire… Jon and his heir.
There will be a showdown between The Hound and The Mountain
Surely, this has to happen. We’ve all been waiting 8 seasons for it, so now has to be the time!
I don’t know who will win, but I think if The Mountain wins, then Arya will kill The Mountain. It may take a tiny person to take down a giant (just like in the classic story ‘David and Goliath’).
Jamie will kill Cersei
The messed-up love affair of Jamie and Cersei Lannister has been tumultuous, to say the least. The last thing we saw in Season 7 was Jamie ‘committing treason’ by running away from King’s Landing to join the fight up North. Let’s assume that Cersei is not going to be best pleased about this.
She has already shown that she is sort-of willing to have Jamie killed by The Mountain. She actually found it easier to threaten Jamie with death than Tyrion when she had him in her office.
So, I think that Cersei and Jamie will meet again, one last time. Cersei is going to do or say something truly terrible that makes Jamie snap. Jamie will then kill Cersei in a fit of rage, then when he realises what he has done to the woman he loves, he will kill himself.
Ooh the drama!
Bran Stark is trapped in the Night King’s body
This is a popular fan theory and one that I think is highly likely.
Bran Stark blatantly has a very important role to play now that he has become ‘the three-eyed raven’. The popular theory is that Bran will go back in time and ‘warg’ into the Night King’s body to try to stop him originally being turned into the first ever whitewalker. However, as the old thee-eyed raven warned, if you stay too long in the past you can get stuck there.
Since the moment where Bran was touched by the Night King during one of his visions, there has been some kind of connection between the two of them. What was the meaning of the Night King being able to see Bran in his vision, when nobody ever has been able to before? Perhaps it is because Bran is in the Night King’s body too so he can see himself cos he knows that he will be there.
It is a very confusing time-loopy thing, but it’s possible since the whole Hodor incident happened. (RIP Hodor)
I think Daenerys will die.
I don’t want this to happen because she is amazing! But no character is safe in Game of Thrones and Daenerys would be one of the biggest shock deaths, after Ned Stark, to die in the series.
Daenerys has seemed like a sure winner for the iron throne the whole series so far. So if she were to die in the final season before she makes it onto the iron throne, that will be a huge shock to viewers. And the GOT writers love a good shock.
I also think that Daenerys will potentially die because of this next theory…
Jon Snow is Azor Ahai
The Azor Ahai prophecy was mentioned quite a bit in earlier seasons. Azor Ahai is the prophecy of a hero who will save the world by wielding a sword called ‘Lightbringer’. Azor Ahai is prophesied to have been reborn to save the world from the endless night.
This will occur after a long summer when an evil, cold darkness descends upon the world. It is said that wielding Lightbringer once again, Azor Ahai will stand against the darkness and if he fails, the world fails with him.
There are several points that Azor Ahai has to hit in order to fulfil the prophecy…
Appeared when the red star bleeds – Still yet to happen, but could happen if and when he creates/holds Lightbringer.
Born amid smoke and salt – When Jon came back to life, apparently his body steamed (like smoke), and there were obviusly tears (hence, the salt).
Woke dragons out of stone – Not yet… but there are theories that there could be dragons hiding in the tombs under Winterfell. Also, now that we know that Jon is secretly half-Targaryen, he kinda is a ‘dragon’ that is about to be awoken…
Sacrificed a loved one to create a powerful weapon – I think this is yet to come…
Descended from Aerys II – He is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen, Aerys’ son.
Connected to ice and fire – The name of the book series is ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ and Jon Snow’s real parents have just been revealed to be Rhaegar Targaryen (fire) and Lyanna Stark (ice). If that’s not a massive hint I don’t know what else is.
Now, both Daenerys and Jon Snow are pretty likely to be Azor Ahai reborn. It would certainly be a great twist if the prophesied hero was actually a ‘heroine’. But I think that Jon Snow will turn out to be Azor Ahai since it has recently been revealed that he is the child of a Stark and a Targaryen – a child of ice and fire.
I also think (and this bit goes hand in hand with my earlier theory) that Jon will have to kill Daenerys in order to hold Lightbringer. Lightbringer was created when the original hero plunged his sword into the breast of his wife. I think Jon will have to do the same to the woman he loves… which is now Daenerys.
A general list of who I think will live or die…
Jon Snow – will survive and kill the Night King.
Daenerys Targaryen – will die as the final battle begins to bring forth Lightbringer.
Tyrion Lannister – will survive.
Cersei Lannister – will die at the hands of Jamie.
Jamie Lannister – will die before the final battle.
Sansa Stark – will survive.
Arya Stark – will survive.
Bran Stark – will die, perhaps when the Night King dies if he is trapped in his body.
The Hound – will die, maybe at the hands of The Mountain.
The Mountain – question: is The Mountain technically part-whitewalker now that he has been brought back from the dead?
Bronn – will die doing something heroic.
Gendry – might survive…
Melisandre – will die before the final battle.
Brienne of Tarth – will die in the final battle.
Theon Greyjoy – please, just die already!
Jorah Mormont – will die to protect Daenerys, although I don’t want him to; I love him!
Lord Varys – will die, probably at the hand of Daenerys for betraying her.
Samwell Tarly – please survive!
Tormund Giantsbane – will die in the final battle.
Davos Seaworth – will die in the final battle.
Podrick Payne – will survive but be badly injured.
Grey Worm – will die in the final battle.
Gilly – will be safe with little Sam, and live happily ever after with big Sam.
So, who do I think will end up sitting on the iron throne?
In a really cool, feminist, twisted world I’d love to see Sansa Stark end up on the iron throne. I think that she has been a dark horse in the whole series and has shown her strength and composure in the worst of situations without having a fighting background. I think she has gone through brilliant character development and I’d kinda like to see her be in the position where Little Finger always wanted to be. Alas, I don’t think it will actually end this way.
I think nobody will end up on the iron throne. I think the monarchy will be abolished, probably by Jon Snow, and a massive camp of ‘wildlings’ will be made up of the humans leftover to rebuild humanity in a post-apocalyptic world.
