What on earth is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. To put it simply, SEO is a combination of the techniques that you apply in order to get your website page to pop up when people type a phrase into a search engine, like Google.

Investing time and effort into your SEO strategy will see the number of your website visitors rise as your post will get in front of more people while they are searching the internet.

For example, if I’m writing this blog post about ‘basic SEO tips’, if I optimise this post to the best of my ability then when somebody types into Google “basic SEO tips” then, with a stroke of luck, my website page will pop up as a recommended answer to their query.

So how can I get my website to pop up on search engines?

The internet is an incredibly saturated place, and it’s getting more and more saturated by the day now that everything has moved online. Therefore you have a lot of other websites to compete with to get seen.

While some companies invest money in digital marketing companies to do their SEO for them, I’m assuming if you’ve landed on my website that you are a fellow blogger or a start-up business looking for a little help on how to do it for yourself.

So here are some basic SEO tips you can use to improve your website’s searchability and get seen by more people online…

Choose a key phrase to focus on.

If you are writing a blog post or writing content for a webpage then there is most likely a theme or a topic for what you are writing. Just as you choose a title for your blog post or a name for your website page, choose a key phrase for what you are writing.

Now use that exact key phrase several times throughout your post. It’s good to use your key phrase as a part of your title and page name/URL, and it can be good to stick it in a ‘heading’ as well as several times within your text. But don’t over-do it!

If you over-use your key phrase then your readers will soon switch off and find it ‘spammy’, so make sure that you are keeping the flow of your copy natural. A general rule to think of for inputting your keyphrase is ‘for every 100 words, 5 of the words should include your key phrase’.

Include your key phrase in your image alt attributes

Now, this is a little bit controversial because the ‘image alt attributes’ of an image are where you can write a description of the picture. This is to help anybody who may not be able to see the image for whatever reason, so they can read the description to get an idea of what the picture is of.

But this is another opportunity for you to be able to slip in your key phrase for SEO optimisation if you are struggling to fit the key phrase into your copy. So, if you are struggling to get your key phrase squeezed in much feel free to use it in your ‘image alt attributes’ which come up when you edit a picture, but do make sure that you are still making it seamless with the description of the picture.

Elisha Blogs basic SEO tips: include links

Include links in your post/web page

Including internal and external links to other web pages really helps your SEO as it creates more options and ways that your website can be found.

Internal links are links to other pages on your own website, and external links are to other websites separate to yours. It is important to add both types in to your copy.

The more internal links you have, the more important a search engine will deem your page and the higher up it will rank on a search. So get linking to other pages on your website and don’t hold back!

Don’t forget to add in any related links to outside web pages too; they help boost your SEO and share the SEO love with others!

Elisha Blogs basic SEO tips: write good content

Write good content

When you are writing your post, don’t write your content just to fit a specific keyphrase. Write good quality content that is honest and flows well, then add in your SEO elements after.

Remember, it’s humans that will be searching for you and reading your content. You don’t want them to get through to your website and be disappointed or turned off by all of your key phrases making it clunky.
